It was clear from day one who the star of the 1992 Shell Oils Superbike season was going to be. Mat Mladin, having stunned spectators and infuriated officials with his spectacular 250cc riding and won his Kawasaki Australia debut at January's Winfield Triple Challenge, scorched to the front of the field and smashed the Sandown lap record immediately. The engine died shortly after, but for the rest of the season he was virtually unstoppable and won 13 consecutive races in an unparalleled display of dominance. Only mechanical issues, unpredictable weather and a few rare mistakes slowed him later in the year, and he won his debut season by over 100 points before being quickly snapped up by Cagiva's 500cc Grand Prix team. Yamaha's Scott Doohan was consistently his nearest rival until a broken collarbone at Wanneroo put him out for a month and allowed Ducati's Roy Leslie to scoop up the runner-up spot in the points. The Winfield Honda team also managed some impressive results with their aging RC30 machines in the hands of Troy Corser and Michael O'Connor.
