After several years of running only part of its intended schedule, and with the new Scandinavian Open series looking to revitalise Nordic road racing, the Nordic Road Racing championship was reduced to a single round for 1996. The sole event took place in Finland alongside a round of the host country's national championship, and it was predictably dominated by local riders with just a handful of interlopers from Sweden breaking into the top ten. In a repeat of Saturday's national race, though this time on a fully wet track, Erkka Korpiaho withstood the pressure from Harri Maikola and Juha Berner, with the latter falling back from the lead pack after running off track.
