1991 Österreichische Staatsmeisterschaft

Austria's first FIM Superbike championship was initially led by a Hungarian; Árpád Harmati had joined the Eagle Racing Honda Team for 1991 and took overall victory in the Landshaag hillclimb followed by a win at the Salzburgring on the same day as his fourth place in the European Superbike race. The remainder of the year was clearly dominated by ex-GP racer Karl Truchsess, now riding for Kawasaki Austria and looking to make a permanent switch to superbikes from 500cc. Truchsess comfortably won the three remaining races but had missed the season opener, so though they rarely battled on track Christian Zwedorn - team-mate to Harmati - fought him closely for the title on points. At the final race, while Truchsess won easily Zwedorn needed no less than second place to clinch the title. In the battle for second with Andreas Meklau he looked beaten, until Meklau decided to endear himself to the Honda bosses by moving aside and giving Zwedorn the runner-up spot at the line. Zwedorn took the championship with just a single point advantage over a furious Truchsess.
