1991 was to be the first of many disappointments for Karl Truchsess in his quest to win the Austrian Superbike title; in 1992 it came in the form of retroactive disqualification from the first half of the season when his bike was found to be underweight after the June Österreichring race. Though he appealed the decision, the Austrian Sport Commission upheld the disqualification in a court hearing in August; once again Truchsess was out of contention for the title despite clearly being the fastest rider all year. His closest rival had been Andreas Meklau, who inherited the title by default but had shown convincing pace during the season. The runner-up spot was fought over by privateer Franz Pfefferkorn and Truchsess's Kawasaki team-mate Andreas Mühlbauer, and at the season finale Pfefferkorn beat his rival on track for the first time all year to claim second in the standings by 0.25 seconds and half a point.
